Over the three sessions I attended for the Transition to the Profession course, I gained valuable skills and information that will surely prepare me for my upcoming internship. The two most prominent skills that I gained were an enhanced knowledge of ICT and an understanding of voice care.
The ICT skills I gained from this course will immensely improve my ability to teach. Before this course I had never attempted to create a movie – albeit the basic film I created in year 9 in 2001 – though now I have the skills to do so. Not only have I gained these skills to create a movie on any topic that I feel is relevant towards my teaching, but I now have an archive of movies that I can access to show my class. I am especially looking forward to using the movie on Shakespeare to introduce him to my year 9 class. Below I have embedded my group’s movie.
It is a movie based around the idea of advertising, more specifically, false advertising and how to identify false advertising. I would use this movie in my year 11 or 12 Business Studies class, but due to the satirical nature of the film, I could also use it in my year 9 English class, for the subject “Satire”. This is again one of the benefits of creating movies, the cross-curriculum nature. I enjoyed the task and will enjoy implementing them in my teaching.
The next skill that I found interesting to learn – and highly important for myself – was the voice care. I have what some have called a “husky”, or “raspy” voice, likened to that of Rugby League greats Darren Lockyer or Gary Larson. I have never once thought about looking after my voice, or that I could damage it. I simply believed that due to having an unusual voice for such a long time, 13 years if I can remember correctly, that it will just maintain and stay strong. I now know that this is not the case. My voice can become damaged and if I do not look after it I will have many lessons where I will be teaching visually, rather than audibly. I will take more care of it in the future.

After reading through the elements on this website I have come up with 4 goals for myself during my internship:
1. I aim to create and deliver lessons that cater for students of all abilities.
2. I aim to establish and maintain a safe, creative and challenging learning environment for my students.
3. I aim to learn the names of all my students in each of my four classes.
4. I aim to seek out and inquire about ongoing professional development.
I look forward to attempting and achieving these goals.
