The element I chose to reflect upon was Element 3: “Teachers plan, assess and report for effective learning.”
Aspect: “Selection, development and use of materials and resources.”
Key Stage: 3.1.4 “Demonstrate knowledge of a range of appropriate and engaging resources and materials to support students’ learning.”
The evidence I have chosen is two YouTube clips I found for my year 10 class, both clips focus on the topic of satire. I told my class I would be introducing “The Simpsons” as a text next lesson and that we would be analysing “The Simpsons” introduction. This was met with groans and explanations that it is old and boring, so instead of being discouraged, I decided to look for an alternate opening that would interest the students. I was able to find one. The alternate opening is created by the people who construct the British street-graffiti art under the name of Banksy. (This clip can be as Video 1)
This different opening was met with a positive attitude from the students, they did not expect it and were more than willing to spend ample time analysing the various satirical aspects within the text. This made me more willing to look for other texts, I then found another clip about “The Simpsons”. This clip proved to be very advantageous because it outlined the specfic elements of satire we would be studying. This clip would be great for visual learners, who can watch and listen rather than just listen and copy what I explain on the white board. (This clip can be seen as Video 2)
I believe this relates to Key Stage 3.1.4 because I have demonstrated knowledge of engaging resources and materials. I did not just give the students the expected materials that the program insisted. I instead demonstrated my researching knowledge to find new materials and actively engaged students learning, while still relating to the correct syllabi. By giving the students something new, I allowed them the opportunity to see something they had not seen before, which they responded positively and got them excited about learning.
